Coursework Projects

My time at UGA has brought me courses covering software, design elements and technique, typography, textiles and so much more.

Personal Identity Study

Concept

In my advanced typography course, we explored typefaces and researched inspiration to create our own logo identity. We worked with our professor, Dr. Ronald Arnholm (an extremely awarded and successful typographer in his own right) to develop logos from scratch. I was inspired by circles and lines to build out my abstract logo.

Identity Book

Once logos were finalized, my class created spreads to show our design process that would later be self-bound into booklets. These spreads are meant to show sketches, drafts, size variations, and the resumé and cover letter created with our logo in mind. Additionally, we mocked up business cards and envelopes for later personal use.

Robot Prototype & Manual

Prototype

The goal of this project was to prototype a futuristic robot and create an accompanying manual. This was a really cool project because we got to work in small groups of three. Although design is an extremely collaborative field, most of our school projects are individual and I enjoyed getting to see how my classmates work differently from myself and learn from them. We created “MAR” which stands for Marine Automated Rover. MAR is modelled after the natural world in that it’s shaped like a jellyfish. This is to ensure that it would interact with the ocean environment in the most non-disruptive way possible. MAR’s function is to efficiently clean up oil spills without causing disruption or harm to the marine life present.

Manual

Our 6x6’ manual was intended to be handheld and compact. From the logo, to the print, to the line illustrations, readability was the goal. The middle section of the manual features transparent pages, each with one component of the robot. This was to illustrate how all the parts of the robot fit together, and for the reader to be able to see them separately. Coupled with images of oil spills, we wanted to show the gravity and necessity of MAR.

Animation

Animation. Daunting for even designers because of the sheer skill and time it requires. I have began learning how to animate with Adobe After Effects. My first project was to pick a song and create a shape animation that matches the style of the artist and goes with the tempo. “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” by Tame Impala was the song I thought of first, and I wanted to do Kevin Parker justice with bright colors and looping visuals.

The next animation is a Euphoria themed text animation to the song “Still Don’t Know My Name.” I shot the video then animated the text over it.

Finally, a “How To Trifle” text animation. Footage shot at home during quarantine was then cut into this baking demonstration, accompanied by text animations.

Flutter App Prototype

App Prototyping

A basic understanding of code can be very useful in web and app design. One of my projects last semester was to prototype an app idea in Adobe XD. “Flutter” is the hypothetical app that idealized and designed. It would be used to take pictures of butterflies in real time. Those photos would then identify the species of butterfly. The second tier of the app concept is social media platform and forum for butterfly lovers. Once the butterfly is identified, you can collect points based on the rarity of the species and post the photo similar to Instagram. There is also a forum for questions, recommendations and general conversation. The design is very modern and simple to give the attention to the details of the butterflies.

Data Visualisation

Data tracking is one of the most important markets in our world today. Data has shifted into almost a form of currency. Our phones collect data on usaage, our employers and the places we shop at collect data, and this webpaage is even collecting data on traffic and visits. In my Data Visualisation class, I tracked data for a whole semester on something of my choosing.

I was unfortunate enough to suffer some major knee injuries and surgeries in a skiing accident that January, so I thought what better way to get through it than to make a project about my progress. Each poster represents a month of that semester, where I tracked data such as time spent on crutches, time spent in pain, days I took medication and attended physical therapy, and major dates like inciting incident and surgeries. Each cocentric circle represents one day of that month, and the key allows to viewer to compare large chunks of time through color coding.
